Melissa Rosenberg Talks About Harry Clearwater's Heart Attack
MTV talked with Melissa Rosenberg about making Victoria the cause of Harry Clearwater's heart attack in New Moon:
“In the book, Harry Clearwater’s death, heart attack is mentioned as something that’s off screen, although it plays a crucial role in the structure of the books,” said Melissa. “Reading that it was Harry Clearwater’s heart attack it just gave me the idea of, why don’t we see this? Stephenie [Meyer] doesn’t specify what caused the heart attack, so I decided, well, you know, if could be caused by something startling him. It could be caused by fear.”
As Melissa said, in the novel there is no explanation for Harry’s death, just how it worked as a plot point. By adding that it was a sighting of Victoria while he and Charlie were “hunting” for the wolf pack that set off the heart attack doesn’t violate Stephenie’s story, and instead adds a new dimension to that moment.
“It was a way to keep Victoria alive, it was a way to keep Charlie and the hunt alive, the danger to Charlie alive,” said Melissa, “and that’s where we get a really great action sequence with Victoria that all blends together with important parts of the movie and bring parts of the book forward. I particularly like that.”
I actually liked the little change, I think it was good for the movie! What did you think?

Melissa Rosenberg Spills Eclipse Deets: Backstories & The Pact!
“That’s cool, I didn’t know he was playing it,” she said of the scene, remembering it in the script but unaware that Peter had been cast in the role. “That’s one of the great things about ‘Eclipse,’ is that Stephenie [Meyer] goes into some of the backstories of ‘How did the wolves come to be?’ and ‘How did Rosalie come to be?’ and ‘How did Jasper come to be?’”
“I got to actually write those scenes, and have them come alive and explore some backstories,” she explained of her script for the third “Twilight” movie, due in theaters next summer. “[Those flashback scenes] are always, for me, very compelling.”
As Billy explained, Peter was cast as “an old Spanish, sort of unrelated vampire, in a flashback sequence” involving Billy Black (Gil Birmingham) telling the origins of the Quileuete wolves.
“[Peter] is involved in telling the story of how the wolves came to be,” Melissa revealed. “He is one of the provocateurs of the wolves way back when — he sort of starts the whole thing rolling.”
As fans know, much of the tension in the “Twilight Saga” revolves around a careful balance that has kept the vampires and werewolves of Forks living in relative peace for decades — until Bella Swan comes along, that is. Peter’s flashback will detail the evolution of the wolves, and shed further details on how the Quileute and Cullens forged their pact.
