My Twilife's Exclusive Interview with 'Hurricane Bells'
You may have heard of a little song called 'Monsters' from the New Moon Soundtrack. Well, I had the pleasure of interviewing the man behind the song, Steve Schiltz, of Hurricane Bells. I had a great time chatting with Steve, he was very nice and down to earth! It was very interesting and quite amazing to find out that Steve created 'Monsters' and his entire album, 'Tonight is the Ghost' by himself on his laptop!
Here is what Steve had to say about that, and much more:
Steve Schiltz: Yeah, I actually made the Hurricane Bells record by myself on my laptop. When I heard the song on the movie, I was so excited! As I was listening I could hear the flaws with the drums in the background, and I thought wow, they actually took it as it was! I thought that was awesome, unbelievable.
My Twilife: What was your reaction when you found out you were selected for the Soundtrack?
Steve Schiltz: When I found out about it possibly being used, they sent me a clip of the movie and needed an edit of the song, they wanted the instrumental part to be little longer for when Edward walks on screen. So I had to send them a couple edits. When I found out, I couldn't tell anyone. I don't know if you remember, but about a week before the soundtrack was announced there was a lot of speculation about who was going to be on it, and that same week I got the clip it was actually very nerve wracking! I thought maybe it was not happening because I couldn't tell anyone about it. But it all worked out.
My Twilife: When you knew you were chosen, what did you do to celebrate?
Steve: When I really found out that it was happening, I went out to dinner with my girlfriend. Oh, and I bought myself a guitar that I have been using to play shows with Hurricane Bells. I really had to start planning and thinking about playing shows, it all happened so fast.

Steve: Before the movie, I had made a record 'Tonight is the Ghost' and I had extra songs, and 'Monsters' was one of those. Before this happened I had planned to put my record out and get videos together. Then the movie happened and now it is the only thing I am working on. I put my record on iTunes and now we are trying to get a physical record out.
My Twilife: So, I saw that you got to attend the L.A. Premiere of New Moon. How was that? How was it hearing your song?

Steve with Justin Chon @ New Moon Premiere (Photo Source)
Steve: Yes, I did go to the premiere in L.A. When I saw it, I got goosebumps! I was with my manager and I was like "This is it! It is coming!" When it was playing, people clapped when Edward came on, but the real moment for me was right before Edward came on screen! I knew it was coming and I had goosebumps!
My Twilife: I can imagine! That must have been such a cool moment!
Hurricane Bells @ Hot Topic Mall Tour (Photo Source)
Steve: They are rabid! *laughs* Oh, I can't remember their real names, but Felix [Daniel Cudmore], Demetri [Charlie Bewley] and Kellan were there on mall tour with me. The shows were terrific, I have never been apart of something like that before. There were like 1500 13 year olds there, it was surreal.
My Twilife: You know, a lot of the Cast is musical, Jackson has a band, Rob is a musician, I heard Kristen plays guitar. So my questions is which one would you most like to sit down with for a little jam session?Steve: You know, honestly I don't really know any of their music so I don't know....Uh, but my girlfriend would probably have me say Rob, not for musical reasons I am sure, but I will pick him! *laughs*
My Twilife: *Laughs* Good choice!
My Twilife: What do you like to do to relax when you have downtime?
Steve: Well, a year ago I started making short videos, it's a hobby of mine but they are also used for work. Two videos I did for the record I am holding on to so I have something to go out with in the new year. I also like to play guitar and write and record music, I am really a simple kind of guy.
My Twilife: Who are some of your musical influences, or favorites?
Steve: Actually it changes all the time. But my favorites right now are Daniel Lanois, he is the producer of U2 and Peter Gabriel's records. Also, Dave Fridmann produced the new Flaming Lips record I love that one! And Robert Plant & Alison Krauss's new record produced by T Bone Burnett.

For more on Hurricane Bells, check them out on their Facebook page or Myspace page where you can listen to more songs and see some of Steve's Videos! Or check them out on Vagrant's website!
Hurricane Bells' album, 'Tonight is the Ghost' is now available on iTunes!
Many thanks to Steve for taking the time to chat with me! Oh, and Steve, I hope you get that chance to come to Ohio and check out Cedar Point! ;)

New Moon Soundtrack Details From Billboard Film & TV Music Conference
Yesterday was the Billboard Film and TV Music conference in Beverly Hills, and Moon from Letters to Twilight WAS THERE...and she MET Chris Weitz...Here is a little of what she learned while there:
There were themes (musical) created for for each character. IE one for Bella, one for Bella and Edward, one for Jacob
To reflect the confusion in Bella’s mind after Edward leaves, at times the “Edward” and “Jacob” themes are “blurred” together to help created “subliminal confusion” in her mind
Jacob’s “theme” features electric guitar. Alexandre used a guitar that sounded very similar to an Indian sitar and Chris jokingly reminded him that Jacob is Native (Indian) American not Indian from India
The score will not featuring any of Carter Burwell’s score. (I’ll expound more on this decision in a later post)
And the most important info: Chris wore a lot of olive and tan. He was in full on DILF mode with cargo pants, striped socks (i love a good sock!), some sort of olive sweater and a leather man purse. Work it Chris, WORK IT!
She has so much more info and deets on meeting Chris, so PLEASE go to Letters To Twilight and read her whole account.

Billboard has a great, LONG article on the New Moon Soundtrack (read the whole thing here). Here are some of my favorite parts from Billboard's write up:...Each song is exclusive to the soundtrack, as-yet-unreleased, and most were written specifically for the movie, remixed or given new lyrics to fit the film's themes. "I was very inspired by the John Hughes movies of the '80s, which made me listen to indie rock bands that probably weren't meant for 13-year-olds: Yello, the Psychedelic Furs, New Order," says music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, who also produced the album, as she did for the soundtrack to "Twilight." "Hopefully we can create a similar moment in time for 2009 teenagers."
As for the film itself, there's more music in it than "Twilight"; it features roughly 20 cues, Weitz says. "The movie has a lot of spots for music and a lot of spots for score, and we're trying to ride a very delicate balance and not make it wall-to-wall carpeting," he says. "I think there is a threat to modern film in that there's not enough silence. And so it's very rare you actually get to hear the entire song played out." The one song that does play in full during the film, he says, is Yorke's "Hearing Damage," which underscores a fight scene.
So to address the question fluttering in a million teenage girl hearts: Why does Pattinson not make an appearance on the second soundtrack?
The answer: He didn't want to. (Sorry, girls.) "We asked if Rob wanted to do it, but his music is kind of his private stuff in a way-as opposed to this huge public dazzle on him on the moment," Katz says. "We wanted to respect that. If he comes to us on the third one and he wants to do something, then we would obviously be delighted."
Here's to hoping Rob contributes to the Eclipse Soundtrack! *raises glass*

Rolling Stone Reviews the 'New Moon' Soundtrack
Rolling Stone reviewed the New Moon soundtrack and gave it 3 1/2 Stars! Here is some of what they had to say about it:As a movie, New Moon isn't too far from Pretty in Pink — except now Duckie's a werewolf. So it's fitting that the soundtrack is up to that same standard of excellence, piling on the New Wave melodrama. Where the original Twilight soundtrack went for rock bombast, as in Paramore's hit "Decode," this year's model is hushed and atmospheric. New Moon rounds up a crew of indie-rock heavyweights — Thom Yorke, Death Cab for Cutie, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver — and you can bet your Team Jacob T-shirt they all rise to the occasion. Death Cab set the pace with their excellent "Meet Me on the Equinox," an Edward-and-Bella makeout song where Ben Gibbard broods, "Let our bodies intertwine/ But always understand that everything ends." Nosferatu-tastic!

Edward & Bella's Tortured Love Story Inspired Lykke Li's NM Song "Possibility"
"I stayed [in Los Angeles] and watched the movie, when it only had green screen on it. I had this hook in my mind, even before I saw the movie, and then I was watching it, and I was like, 'That's the hook!' " she said. "So it was very much like a discovery, inside myself and musically. I had this song growing inside of me that I had to get out, and [the film] was the trigger. Because I really connected with Bella and Edward's tortured love story."
So Li sat down at her piano and wrote "Possibility," a very maudlin song about love and pain and, ultimately, death. Lots of death. Like we said, she doesn't operate like most of her pop contemporaries.
"I get very visual when I make the songs. It's really quite serious. It's almost like a fever haze. It's very repetitive, like a mood you go into. But it's really serious, because, if you're really, really in love, and somebody leaves you, that's a very serious thing," Li explained. "And so the lyrics are like, 'When you walk, you walk like a thief with blood on your hands, because I die when you leave me.' It's in this limbo that, when the song is done, you don't know if I've survived or not. It's very much like a fever, like, 'Oh, my God, it's hot, she's going to die, maybe she did die?' It lingers on, into the next life. It's dark."

New Moon Soundtrack Scene Details From the Artists
Church of Sea Wolf, Annie Clark and OK Go from the New Moon soundtrack talked to Vanity Fair about their song's lyrics and which scene in the movie their song is in:
Alex Brown Church of Sea Wolf on “The Violet Hour”
Do you know what scene [the song] will be featured in?
All I know is it’s going to be in a party scene … a house-party scene.
Can you give us some sample lyrics?
Sure.
Your arms are lovely
Yellow and rose
Your back’s a meadow
Covered in snow
Your thighs are thistles
And hothouse grapes
You breathe your sweet breath
And have me wait
Annie Clark, also known as St. Vincent, on her song with Bon Iver, “Rosyln.”
What’s the mood of [the song]?
It’s a melancholy, bittersweet kind of song with softer acoustic guitar and slide guitar—we kind of make up this choir of voices. It’s a somber song, for sure, very aching, longing, and beautiful. Typical Justin Vernon.
Do you know what scene they’re using it for?
I don’t know where the song will be in the film, but I know that Edward and Bella will not have sex to it.
Tim Nordwind of OK GoWhat does ["Shooting the Moon"] sound like?
It’s a psychedelic acoustic song. It’s different from what people have known from us before. I don’t think we’ve ever released a psychedelic folk jam! For anyone who knows [of] the band, I think it will be a pleasant surprise from all guitars all the time. There’s a heavy emotive quality to our song. I hope that people who buy the soundtrack like it. You hope that it’s a gateway to people wanting to check out more.
Can you give us a sample of some of the song lyrics?
What can he tell ‘em now
Sorry I let you down
Sorry I wasn’t quite true
But don’t get hung up on it
Just soldier on with it
And good luck shooting the moon
Sounds very apropos. Do you know what scene it’s featured in?
Yes, I do. It’s a montage scene. The song itself is a thoughtful, acoustic song, and the scene they’re using it for is a moment when you see the two kids flirting with each other for the first time.
You mean Bella and Jacob?
Right, yeah.

Head over to Anya's Myspace to listen! I Really Love this song, it's perfect! The lyrics are dead on!
Tell me these lyrics aren't dead on:
"So Pretty, so smart, such a waste of her young heart. What a pity. What a sham, what's the matter with you man?" (Can't you just picture Jacob thinking this?)
"I'm a Satellite Heart, lost in the dark. I'm spun out so far, you stop I start. But I'll be true to you, no matter what you do." (Bella to Edward anyone...)

"I Belong To You" by Muse To Be Redone For New Moon Soundtrack
MTV has the details on Muse's song "I Belong to You" which they will re-do specifically for the New Moon Soundtrack:
Singer Matt Bellamy revealed: “I spoke to the director yesterday (and) he wants the track I Belong To You, the sort of vaudeville piano track.“He wants a rendition of that but the only thing with the new film is they want the songs to be exclusive to the film. So he’s asking if I mind doing, or if we mind doing an alternative version of it.”
Asked if they were up for it Matt said: “I think it’s alright- if it was one of the main tracks on the album I would never do it. But it’s actually one of the weirder tracks on the album.
“(It’s) one of the can't believe we got away with it kind of tracks. I think it might be worth giving it a go cos it’s a track that might not get played live very often… one of the obscure tracks off the album so it might give that track some life that it wouldn’t have otherwise.”
Muse’s hit Supermassive Black Hole featured in the first Twilight film- giving the three piece exposure in the States.
Dom from the band said: “It’s opened it up in some kind of way, millions of people listening to Supermassive Black Hole that have probably never heard our band before- which is not a bad thing.”
He added: “They have all gone bloody vampire mad over there seriously, it’s crazy!”
I love Muse, so this excites me! You?
